I've been feeling ill a lot lately with seemingly random symptoms such as intermittent diarheora, palpitations and chest pains, numbness in my limbs and a habit of falling over (without feeling dizzy or passing out). Also my blood pressure is suddenly very low, every time it has been checked it's been too low, it never used to be. My father died 6 years ago of a rare disease called Amyloidosis, he also had low blood pressure and chest pains and i watched him die slowly and painfully over two years. I've had lots of tests including an MRI but have to wait weeks for the results, meanwhile i'm driving myself mad with what ifs, i'm a very positive person normally and tend to worry about things if and when they happen but this has got me worried as i don't know of anything else these symptons could be attributed to. If anyone does, i'd love to know to help put my mind at rest

Karen, please ignore all the prospective 'diagnoses' that you've received here.

What you really need to do is consult with your own doctor. Mention to him/her the symptoms that you've been getting and see what s/he suggests.

I'm sure you're well aware that one type of amyloidosis is familial (passed down), so I won't go on about it.

What I would advise, is that you read all you can find about the condition. Although what I've read doesn't make comfortable reading, I think it pays to know, in advance, what could happen, what treatments are available, etc.

See the following links for a starting point. (The third url gives quite a good description of the condition, and it's not too long to get through.)

I wish you the very best of luck with whatever is found from any tests that you have done.

If you wish for a bit of moral support on a one-to-one basis, please don't hesitate to contact me via email.

Aw, it's rotten to be worrying about 'what if' and no matter how hard you try, your brain just won't let it go. If it will help put your mind at rest, if I'm worried/stressed about something, I get pretty much the same symptoms you mention - the diarrhoea, numbness, etc. I do have slightly low blood pressure too. To put your mind at rest, I would imagine that if there was something major going on, it would have shown up in some of the tests you've had already. And also, if the medical people thought it was something major and scary, I'm sure they would be rushing through your latest test results quicker than a few weeks. Tests are there to also rule out the big major things that aren't wrong with you, as well as trying to find out what is. I hope this helps, and try to accept you won't completely put it out your mind - who would - but try remind yourself it's all good news so far, and do whatever you can to take your mind off it. I'm sorry I can't give an answer as to what exactly your symptoms mean, but hope that this has helped to put some perspective on the matter. Good luck.

I know all about not being positive and thinking the worst when feeling ill.... unfortunately I don't think anyone except for a doctor it's a good thing you started on the tests and the waiting is the worst part so because of that if you have any other symptoms or questions you should call your doctor or if you feel too ill then go to the hospital because at least there they get results ASAP. I hope it all turns out well, hopefully it's just weather changing and something you ate... good luck!

You may be falling over and feeling dizzy because your blood pressure is too low. Mine is low too at around 85/60 - 95/75. My doc thinks its great and I should be pleased with myself - at least its healthier than it being too high, but I too get dizzy. You're probably feeling anxious worrying about whether you have the same condition or similar and anxiousness can cause diarrhoea, palpitations, strange pains, tingling and numbness. Try calming down with some camommile tea (avoid caffeine), Bach Rescue Remedy or even going to see a homeopath (perhaps one who is also registered as a GP) as he can treat you constitutionally, ie. treat your general wellbeing and any symptoms you may have. It's only natural to think of the what ifs, but thinking too much about it can make you feel worse, it's like a snowball effect. Think positive. Concentrate on becoming calmer and turn your attention to something else to take your mind off it. Best of luck and here's hoping you feel better soon.

Cheryl B you b***h.

Im afraid you will have to wait and see. I know it is a nightmare waiting for your results, im sorry to hear you haven't been feeling well.

The only thing you could do is call your consultant's secretary and see if they can push through your results. I wouldn't call within the first week of having the tests done, as the tests need reporting on by the person who carried them out, and this is why you have to wait some time.

Good luck and all the best.

Ignore idiots like that Cheryl B. She's just a little, rude, nasty person.

I had a MRI done also. and you should have the results, max. in one week. Call your Dr. and tell him you need to find out the results of that MRI, as you are very afraid of what might be wrong, and you are getting yourself all worked up, because you are afraid. I would be too. Doctors do not realize what people go through, waiting for test results. Put pressure on the DOC. FOR THOSE TEST RESULTS.

The symptoms could be due to stress over worrying (maybe subconsciously) about wether youll get ill like your dad. Anxiety can manifest itself in a range of real symptoms. The best thing is to try and take it easy if you can til the results are through. Maybe try relaxation exercises or a self help anxiety book. I know everyone will say it but theres no point worrying unless/until you really need to.

All of the symptoms you mention can be caused by anxiety and / or stress. If you have been to you GP, he / she may have an idea what is wrong and be testing to prove that or, if he /she doesn't know what is wrong, will be testing to rule things out. Be patient, (I know this is easy for me to say!) your GP is a very qualified person to either sort you out or pass you to someone who can.

If you are worried (who wouldn't be?) that you may have what your Father had, ask your GP directly if they think it is this. Also you can research the condition on the internet, there are some very good sites. Just enter Amyloidosis into your preferred search engine and take it from there.

Good luck.
