When you get a new TomTom it does not come with a home charger, this needs to be bought separately, so you can charge it up from a cigar lighter in the car. It will work in any car, and has enough power to start working straight out of the box, but make sure you are outside as it cannot pick up the satellite signal from inside...
Have fun driving with it, but keep those eyes on the road!

The .actual operation of the Tom Tom is very easy and quite intuitive. Yes it can work from a car charger and definitely needs one for continuous use of more than about 2.5 hours. For shorter times it will work off its own battery. You can charge them at home, but you have to buy the charger separately- about £20.
I shouldn't think you need a special; so long as you can site it so its can receive the signals (on the dash or best fixed to the screen).
Found mine to be most useful.

Runs from car adaptor (needs cigar lighter socket), also charges from computer USB port and also can use motorola RAZR type charger, or buy tomtom mains charger at extra £20. When fully charged will run for 2 hours or so on internal battery. Ideally need to connect to internet via computer once a week or so to get updates.

My Tom-Tom came with a home charger and an in car charger. It will operate bet 2 or 3 hours on its battery. Very easy to use with a good display. Instant recalculation if you prefer to change route given and not too bad on the points of interest. Also comes with usb to hook up to PC for updates. includes holder for sticking to car window. All in all an excellent package for the price. I have one of the earlier ones and can now be bought very cheaply. Newer ones have bluetooth for use with mobile phone.
