The ark of the Covenant.
A box of wood, overlaid with gold.
The wood speaks of Christ's humanity.
The gold speaks of His divinity.
The ark was covered by the mercy seat, the place of God's favor ,and the place where He appears to men. The word translated "propitiation" in Romans 3:25, "Whom God displayed publicly, as a propitiation in His blood through faith...", is actually the same word translated "mercy seat" in Hebrews 9:5, and is the normal word for the mercy seat in the Septuagint, the Greek version of the Old Testament.
Within the ark were contained the 2 tablets containing the 10 commandments, written with the finger of God. Of Christ it is prophesied, "I delight to do Thy will, O My God; Thy Law is within My heart." (Psalm 40:8)
Also in the ark were Aaron's rod which budded, signifying divinely appointed priestly authority, and the pot containing the manna, Jesus being the "bread come down from heaven." (John 6:32,33)
On top of the mercy seat we see two cherubim, facing each other and peering down upon the mercy seat. In I Peter 1:12 we read "It was revealed to them (the prophets), that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the Gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven - THINGS INTO WHICH ANGELS LONG TO LOOK."
Many books have been written along these lines.
A good easy read on the subject was written by Judson Cornwall, called "Let Us Draw Near"
Peace to you.
