First backup anything that you need to keep - you can load windows over windows, but you never know when something is going to mess up (you should always keep backups anyway).

I always format the hard drive first, in case the problems you are having that are making you want to reinstall are related to problems with the formatting - it gives you a nice clean slate for a nice clean reinstall.

I'm pretty sure all XP cd's are bootable, so you should just be able to put the CD in, and turn the computer on - and it will take you to an install menu to get started. If for some reason it won't boot to the CD, go into BIOS and make sure that it is set to boot to the CD if one is present.

It should pretty much walk you through installing, or repairing the existing install.

If your windows XP is working, but is just having problems, you might be able to clean it up and avoid having to reinstall. Start by pressing ctrl+alt+del and going into the task manager, pick 'processes' and make a list - go online and search for directions on IF and how to remove each item. You should notice considerable performance increase.

I did this last December and had all kinds of problems getting Microsoft to reactivate my windows. Now mine is old, and I suspect yours is not new, so be prepared to have all the Cd's you need Sp2 , Set it all up and then call Microsoft Service depending on where you live. I was told it should take only a few minutes. It did when I reached someone who knew what I was asking. Good luck

Insert the CD, restart the computer, and if boot from CD is enabled, it'll either have a prompt to press a key to boot the CD or will automatically do so, then just follow the instructions.

Just pop in the disc and it tells you what you need to do to install. I've only did mine once but it is so easy.
