Supplements can be good but they are just that - SUPPLEMENTS - and shouldnt be substituted for a dietary plan.
So your best source of iron is via nutrition and eating things like red meats, liver and green veggies and all the other suggestions made here.
But remember that some of these sources of iron can also contain substances that make it hard to absorb the iron (eg spinach) so you also need to make sure you eat food high in Vitamin C to help your body absorb the iron.
Parsley is one source of iron that is often overlooked but you should consider it because it has other excellent health benefits such as cleansing and strengthening the blood.
Oh and any tablet form of iron is likely to have absorption problems too so if you do also take a supplement make sure it contains vitamin C or boost your vit c intake in some way. (I think you can buy Iron + Vit C tablets). But like I said, you shouldnt use tablets INSTEAD of a diet high in iron.

I've heard liver..however won't touch it personally. lol. Why don't you take an iron supplement? They sell them OTC at most chain, grocery and other stores. I'm surprised if that was his suggestion that he didn't prescribe you any or suggest that to you. However, DO NOT over do it. You can sometimes easily over dose on iron, even if your levels are low. Follow the directions carefully and good luck!

Probably liver, but all red meat is rich in iron it is available as 'haem'. Vegetable sources such as broccoli contain iron, however it is in the ferrous form and less well absorbed.
