My step-son goes to counselling and his therapist believes that natural consiquences are the most effective form of discipline. He is thirteen years old, and he comes from an abusive background. He grew up with his maternal grandmother abused him physically and emotionally. His mother abandoned him when he was a toddler. Because of this past abuse, he has behavior problems. I am wondering what are some examples of natural consiquences for common behavior problems that happen at his age?

He has ADHD and possible Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. His father and I got custody of him two-and-a-half years ago, and we have three other children as well.

Natural consequences: I don't do my laundry so I have no clothes to wear to school, I don't do my homework so I fail the class.
However, for a child with the background of your step son, I don't know if this is the only way to go. He needs someone to teach him, support him and guide him. It sounds like natural consequences will just let him "sink or swim". If he has emotional issues, he may not be able to see the consequences of his actions. I think he needs solid structure, firm guidelines and routine. He needs to know he can trust you and rely on you. I think at this point in his life you should try to set out a list of consequences for bad behaviour: ie. if you don't do your homework, you can't go outside or watch television. If you don't clean your room, you can't talk on the telephone, etc.

i looked it up and natural consequences are "Natural consequences are outcomes that happen as a result of behavior that are not planned or controlled" one example given is if a child cuts a child in line at lunch then at recess then the child wont play with the "cutter" at line.

Homework issues come to mind. If he won't do the work explain what will happen--you will fail the class and let it be.
He doesn't clean his room--close the door and let him live in filth.

"Natural consequences are situations that are not controlled by anyone, they happen naturally. If you put your finger in a electric socket, you get a shock."
