That comes from Christians who have no idea what evolution entails.

Evolution is really the poster child for naturalism. Creation as described in the bible is contradicted by a wide range of theories and scientific disciplines. Science ultimately requires the assumption that physics and chemistry have always behaved the same way, at least since the singularity of the Big Bang, when attempting to explain the past or future. Creation describes a singularity of sorts that occurred a few thousand years ago( perhaps five to ten thousand years) but left no traces and instead left a universe that looks like it is much, much, much, much older. The only evidence supporting this recent Creation event is outlined in a book which speaks to this event in very broad and general strokes.

With respect to evolution, we know it occurs, as it can be observed and controlled. We use it every day. The entire agriculture industry is dependent evolution. The corn you see growing over vast stretches of the Midwest, is nothing like the wild strains we would have found 300 years ago. The creation/evolution debate is whether this has always occurred and is responsible for all biologic diversity we see today.

Evolution describes how all the species on earth came about, but not how the first life started. Creationism explains how all the species on earth came about, and the start of life is included in that explanation. So the evolution vs. creationist debate is only comparing the part of how all the species cam about.

Because Creationism asserts that the various species were "created" as they are now, as we know them today.

Although there are some folks who I call "creationsim apologists" who assert that the species that were created were - prototypes, I guess I'd say. This is usually dredged up when someone mentions that no ship could have built to contain all the species on the planet.

I actually read a book once that proposed this - that originally there was only one kind of doglike animal, one kind of birdlike animal, one kind of catlike animal, one kind of gnat-like insect, etc., so Noah *could* have fit all of THOSE on the ark.

But then, that either means that there HAS been evolution, or that God created more specific types after the flood, and didn't do the entire creation bit "in the beginning."

I laughed a lot while I was reading that book.

Because we live in the age of the mass media.

People would rarely read an article in the tabloids, newspapers or watch a documentary entitled "Merits of the theory of Evolution and the origin of the species as opposed to Abrahamistic belief systems in the creation of the known universe." Hardly a catchy title...

In today's media, most topics are reduced to their lowest common denominators, or dumbed-down, in order to target the widest possible audience, so it is hardly surprising when people inaccurately perceive a certain subject...especially in this vein of science or theistic philosophy...

Well said.

Its just a load of Religious nuts who cant accept that we evolved rather than were just magically put on the planet.

Evolution does not explain the origin of life it is just the study of how life progresses once it occurs.

It just shows how out of touch religious people are from reality at least the christians are just whinging about evolution and not resorting to acts of mass terrorism.

Because Creationists think everything was made just like it is now and the Theory of Evolution threatens their hypothesis so they are the biggest critics of it.

Resulting in a specious contest between 2

Thomas L>>No it doesn't. It is a Theory about the adaptation of life..it has nothing to do with life's origins.

I am glad you said, "Evolution vs. Creationism" rather than "Evolutionism" as said by some of your answerers. That indicates that you have an understanding that evolution is not an "-ism," meaning simply a belief system, whereas creationism is a belief system based on faith alone.

Evolution is based on scientific method and physical evidence. Creation (or, "intelligent design") is based completely on faith in one creation myth among many that have existed during mankind's existence.

So why is it said, "Evolution vs. Creationism"?

For about three thousand years, Jews first and then Christians have believed the story of creation given in the book of Genesis. The Genesis story was in turn based on earlier creation mythologies (creationists, don't get upset, that is a fact even Biblical scholars agree on; see the website below for more info). With little or no understanding of biology, zoology, cosmology, etc., that story was the best explanation for the existence of the universe and mankind that they had. It was also true that "celestial spheres" and "epicycles" were the best explanations of the universe that they had.

Galileo (and others) challenged the Church's view of the earth-centered universe, and on penalty of death was forced to recant, despite what he knew to be true. Others were burned at the stake or hanged because they refused to deny the truth as demanded by the Church, which knew that it was right because it believed the Bible, not what Galileo saw with his own eyes.

Similarly, for all those years Jews first, and then Christians, believed the Biblical account of the creation of animals, plants and humans: God said it, and instantly there were plants... God said it, and instantly all the animals existed... God gathered some dust and shaped it into a human form, blew into its nostrils and it instantly turned into a flesh and blood man (Eve came along later).

Christians, well meaning and otherwise, attempted to supress Darwin's observations and ideas just as they did those of Galileo. That battle against these ideas goes on to this day despite volumes and volumes of scientific evidence and decades of study and research, all of which points to the accuracy of those ideas (if not every precise detail of Darwin's initial theory).

So your question should probably read, "why... creationism vs. evolution?" Science simply lays out the facts, and draws logical conclusions from all the evidence available. But it is human nature to strongly resist changing one's beliefs, both political and religious. Creationists want to hold on to their old beliefs regardless of evidence or logic, and they fight very hard to do so.

So what if creationists want to believe archaic mythologies, what is the harm in that? Perhaps there is no harm, to them at least. The problem arises when they try to supress verified proofs, documented evidence, observed reality and accepted scientific fact in favor of their mythology.

That is exactly what is happening in the current debate between creationism and evolution. Believers in the creation myth are trying to force it into public school science classes, even proposing changes in local and federal laws to force their agenda. This is exactly the same as if mystics tried to force astrology, crystalology, faith healing or astral projection to be taught in science classes.

Science (not "evolutionists") resists faith-based mythology being taught in science classes, replacing or confusing confirmed scientific fact and knowledge with unproven, pseudo-scientific theology and mythology.

And simply put (that was "simply"?) that is the answer to your question.

The more any person knows about science, cells, genetics and DNA, the more God is revealed through science. God wants it this way because God says even the heavens declare His glory. Evolution is a dead theory, but science must continue to show how intelligent God really is. Just one little cell is so far above man's head that man must know there is a God. Nano technology will reveal more of the greatness of God.

Because evolution describes how it is that life has arrived at it's current form(s), and creationism thinks quite differently indeed. Creationists seem to think that we all just popped up in our current forms 6500 years ago while 99.99% of all scientists concur that it just didn't happen that way.
