As documents grow larger, the probability increases that Word will mess up the whole document format. If I change a paragraph to center-justified, ALL of the paragraphs in the document are treated the same, for example. As a document grows, it is more annoying to have to go back to re-format every paragraph. How can I avoid this?

You're probably not using styles. By not using styles, your document is controlled by one format style, normal. So every time, you make an adjustment to that style, your document changes. Study styles in Word -- it's the only way to format a large document. Applied formatting is not wise in Word because the file size can become too big and end up corrupting the document. You can make styles your best friend if you learn how to use them.

When you want to change just ONE paragraph, SELECT it using the mouse to highlight the entire paragraph and then change the formats. This will change just the area highlighted.
