My daughter has Sensory Integration.
We would like to put a fish tank in her room to help sooth her, calm her or just give her some visual input.
However, I have heard that the fake aquariums are pretty neat, too.
Does any parent with a child with sensory issues have a real fish tank or have any advice?

I have a real fish tank!! and I had a fake one before that!!! The fake one actually made more noise at night so it kept getting turned off..Those fake fish kept clanking around in there making noise!! The real tanks are really soothing and you can teach your daughter responsibility by letting her have to responsibility of feeding the fish!! and plus its really fun to take them to wal mart and have them pick out all the stuff that goes in the bottom of the tank!! you can make like a really neat project out of it!! PLus the best part is picking out the fish!! and then letting her name her little fish... im assuming she is in that age range!! if not i still think the real tanks are more soothing as definatly not as loud!!

My daughter has sensory integration issues. She fears falling and fears big items that could possibly hurt her such as the tub; however, we have the Fischer Price "Ocean Wonders Aquarium" on her crib since the day she came home from the hospital. She's now 20 months and still has to have it on at naps and when she goes down for the night. I highly recommend it. After all, there's no yucky tank to clean!

I think mostly it depends on what kind of tank, and how much time you have to spend cleaning it. Saltwater tanks are beautiful, but costly to set up and keep clean. Even a regular fish bowl (I would get one with soft lights) need to be cleaned at least once a week. Saltwater tanks stay clean longer if they are not exposed to light for extended periods of time. We had saltwater tanks at my old job and the two guys that came to clean it charged $120 a month to come out twice a month to clean it.
