It tells you on the screen that appears during boot up. It also tells you on the side of the Start menu. Or you can go to the Control Panel, click on the System icon, and it will tell you in the General information there.

Quick way:
Click START:
Do you see 2 columns? Yes= XP
Do you se 1 Column?
If Yes, look along the Left Edge for the Version stated in the colored bar.

Usually while booting it up it will tell you.
Otherwise try clicking on 'start' and it should say up the side
Possibilities are 3.11 (old) win95, win98, winme, winNT, win2k (2000), winxp, or windows vista (brand new).

Hmm... turn off your PC or laptop and turn it on. Wait for the screen to startup and it will show you what windows it is.
