there are several ways around this GENUINE MICROSOFT.

THERE ARE LIST OF KEY CODES ON THE NET. JUST SPEND A FEW MINUTES SEARCHING AND YOU WILL FIND THEM there is always the chance that the code you have is good..i googled my own key code and found out that was for a particular build. so there needs to be thousands of computers using the same key code.. well good luck

go on.
install
but only security updates will be allowed.
because, all the other software updates need u to have a genuine version of xp.
for example, if u go for installing the media player 11 or IE 7.0, they require u to confirm that the copy of windows u r using,is genuine.
for this, they require u to run a java script file (which will be given by them) which will automatically send the website information about the genuinnes of ur xp.
of course ur xp will not pass the genuineness test.
so they will deny updating the SOFTWARES.
BUT
security updates via automatic updates will continue workng
