i guess you could order it but you will have to pay again. and i guess the reason that no cd was sent was because they dont want copies to be made. and sold.

Burning a recovery CD will not get you your copy of Windows Vista. It will get you a disk you can use to restore your system to factory defaults. What happens if you wish to do a clean install and leave off all the BS that HP has added to your system. This is the main reason that I personally refuse to buy prefab PCs. Your best bet is to contact HP. The first answer given was correct.

Don't think I've ever gotten an actual Windows CD when I've gotten a store bought computer. Just restore CDs.

These days there are two ways I know of for distributing Windows with new PCs.
1. Store the Windows setup stuff on a seperate partition on the harddrive (possibly hidden) and provide access to it via a key press at boot time or via a restore CD/DVD. (My old WinME Compaq used that method.)

2. Put the Windows setup stuff on a restore disc, often with a limited custom interface that won't provide all the options a regular Windows CD/DVD would. (Say just Restore or Exit.)

The version of Windows that comes with most PCs is an OEM version, and would be customized to include drivers for the specific hardware that computer came with, which is likely why they do things this way.

Go to the Supplier they are Legally Obligated to Give you an OEM disc. If they Refuse, then Report them to MS.
MS should make good regardless of what HP do, but Asking HP to do the right thing is the first step

Read the HP User Manual.

The instructions to create your Vista Recovery CD / DVD are there. Burn them ASAP, before it's too late.

My new dell Vista laptop didn't come with a Windows disc or so I thought, but it was just labeled operating system.

There should be a seperate folder or hard drive partition on your computer with the install on it, just burn a copy, if there is no copy of the install disk somewhere you will need to call the manufacturor and demand a copy of the disk!
