I've been car shopping the last couple of weeks. May I recommend looking at new Chevy Impalas or Malibus, or Ford Fusions. Both the Malibus and Fusions are available with 4 cylinders so they will get decent mileage. A 6 cylinder is better if you like a little pick up. They too get respectable gas mileage.
If you shop just right you can probably squeak by with a new Impala or Fusion for that money with decent options. You can probably get a very nice Malibu for that money.
By the way. I just purchased the Fusion. Nice. I would have went with an Impala, but right now damn near every Impala in my area is only available in White, Black or Silver. I wanted it in Bordeaux Red or Imperial Blue without a bunch of expensive extras. The Fusion is Merlot Red and awesome looking.
Not only that, today's Toyotas are very plain and drab. The new Hondas aren't bad looking.

Get a car that you will engoy driving everyday. If you are into SUV's then get one that you think is the best over all; handling, looks, safety, gas mileage and the overall rating of that vehicle. BMW's are very nice to own and if you take good care of it and dont neglect the vehicle it can last you for a while with a price that you can afford ($15k -$20K). Good Luck.

Get a Honda Accord. If you buy used since 2003, you are buying the current generation, which actually beat the newly redesigned Camry. And if you buy a 2003 or 2004, you can get a really nice one for under $20,000.

I just boutght a 2005 Pontiac G6 GT fully loaded: Leather seats, 6 disc changer, heated seats, sun roof, 17" chrome wheels, power everything. I got all that for $12,500 with a trade in of $6,000. so for under $20,000 your can look at those at least. Plus im getting 25mpg city and 36mpg hwy.

You could get a used BMW 3 series. They are good looking, get good gas mileage, and if you get a 2000-2002, they are around $15,000-$19,000 some are even cheaper yet still good. They are awesome cars, good quality and still run very nice after 100,000 miles.

Take your time, & look at a few.....then look at the Kia Sportage, & Sorento....I think you'll like them. The quality is quite good. The service is excellent. The price can't be beat by any other make, & they get good gas milage.....Good luck.
