I've been on methadone maintenance therapy for 6 years and have just recently (2/21/07) switched to suboxone with the goal of becoming drug free by June ' 07. People that have experience with this drug say that less is better and the shorter amount of time on the drug the easier it will be in getting off of it. My Dr. wants me to stay on it for a minimum of 2 yrs. and he is unable to give me a good reason why. So then, do I detox relatively quickly and get on with my life, or prolong this misery for another 2 yrs. per the Dr? Any suggestions from Sub users is greatly appreciated...but you don't have to be a Sub user to answer. Thank you.

If you don't want to relapse, I would suggest you follow your doctors recommendations. He is basing his recommendations on years of experience and the success of former patients. He can't give you a reason to stay on it for a minimum of two years other than he thinks it is the best course of action for you.

If you do not agree, why not get a second opinion? Keep in mind that another doctor is not going to know your medical history or your drug history as well as your current doctor. You have only been on the Subuxone since February (only 2 months). I am concerned that if you wean off now, after such a short period of time, you will relapse.

If you decide to detox quickly, I suggest you consider doing it in a drug treatment center to be sure that you and your health are not put at risk.

Of course, in the end, the decision is yours and you will have to deal with how it all turns out. No one can force you to take something you have no desire to take. No matter what you decide, I wish you the best!
