On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Edit tab.
To replace existing text as you type, select the Overtype mode check box.
Tip: For a quick way to switch between Insert mode and Overtype mode, double-click OVR on the status bar. (When OVR is dimmed, Insert mode is on; when OVR is bold, Overtype mode is on.)
Also, you can just hit the "Insert" button on your keyboard to switch between words being inserted or typed over existing text.

All you have to do is hit insert again. It troggles itself between Insert and Overtype.

You push the insert button, and it goes to overtype mode (you may see "OVR" around the bottom of the window), and if you push it again, it turns off.

Just like everyone said, press the Insert key on your keyboard. At the bottom of your Word document, you will see the letters OVR appear.

Press the insert button which is on your key board or can also double click on the downward side of the microsoft word bar at the box on which (ovr) text is written. Thanks
