No evidence. It's that simple.
Everyone on this planet is an atheist with respect to 99% of all the gods man has ever created. Some of us just go one god further

Not all atheists are hostile to religion, but many do think that religion is bad. Here are some of their reasons:
Religion gets people to believe something untrue.
Religion makes people base the way they run their lives on a falsehood.
Religion stops people thinking in a rational and objective way.
Religion forces people to rely on outside authority, rather than becoming self-reliant.
Religion imposes irrational rules of good and bad behaviour.
Religion divides people, and is a cause of conflict and war.
The hierarchical structure of most religions is anti-democratic, and thus offends basic human rights.
Religion doesn't give equal treatment to women and gay people, and thus offends basic human rights.
Religion obstructs scientific research.
Religion wastes time and money.
Most atheists willingly concede there are some good things about religion, such as:
Religious art and music.
Religious charities and good works.
Much religious wisdom and scripture.
Human fellowship and togetherness.

2 Corinthians 4:1-6 tells us that those who are perishing or 'lost' (KJV) their minds have been blinded by the god of this age lest Christ would reveal it to them through the light of the gospel. Romans chapters 1 will give you more understanding to the subject also. Romans 2:12-16 tells us that their conscience stands as a silent witness to individuals who choose to deny His existence as the Law of God is written in our hearts when we were created from birth.
Oh yes, and I failed to mention: whenever you read through the Gospel accounts, Jesus chooses not to reveal Himself and who He is to whose who are proud of heart. God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. He first confronts someone about their sin and then if they are broken or deeply sorrowful due to their sinfulness only then does He reveal His grace and show people what He has gone on their behalf.
Take a quick look at most churches, including those professing to be Christian and you'll get an understanding of what I mean. If you have any more questions, I'd strongly recommend listening to the bottom few links below

I could write a book on this. Maybe I should. I have answered this question so many times here. A number of years ago I realized I was forcing myself to believe in things I knew were not true. I decided to be honest with myself and came out of the experience an atheist. When I look at the vastness of the universe it seems incredibly arrogant to think that we are the center of it all.

The first and foremost reason, aside from your wishful thinking, is ZERO PROOF!! Duh.
Intelligent people know that something created all this, but we're just not so ignorant as to say we know what it is.
Whatever it is, it gave me the most important thing of all...a B.S. filter...MY BRAIN!
Religions and gods were created to control the masses and their money. It has worked beautifully for eons and seduces even the most educated.
The reason it works is due to mans fear of death, and his inability to explain his existence.
Simply promise him eternal life if he follows your "god's" orders, and eternal torture if he doesn't. Works like a charm.
The only thing that constantly changes is the names and numbers of the gods.

There is no direct evidence or proof that a god exists. God and see if it applies to well Santa. God knows everything we do. Santa knows if we are good and bad. God promises heaven for being good. Santa offers goodies for being good. For being bad Santa gives coal, god give hell. You don't have a problem with not believing in Santa, but why does god with the same characteristics, but on a more adult level seem plausible?

As I look at these answers most of them say simply, "because I don't". Or they might say why it's stupid to beleive in God.
They find it incomprehensible that some people think that we could be the only planet amoung millions that is inhabited, but find it perfectly logical that the billions of of pieces of information came together in exact order for you to be you happened just by chance.
Most people don't believe in God because they are arrogant & believe in essence that they are God.
The results unfortunately in many cases are shattered and broken lives. But you know Bowjwa don't usually think or care too much about what happens to the poor and downtrodden.
Visit your local rescue mission (if it's not too dirty for you) and talk to people. See the results in the lives of people who tried to be their own God. You can also see people who's lives changed dramatically by accepting that there is a God.

There's no reason, in theory, why god's presence couldn't be measured or detected in some way. The only reason that believers claim that god "can't" be detected in this way is because god *isn't* detected, and so a vast and intricate rationale has to be devised to explain this vast, loving, eternal, all-powerful "something" which is, in every external, objective respect, indistinguishable from nothing.

One should envision one's Gods as being at least as good as the best human beings. The best of us would not damn people for eternity for an honest difference of opinion or because they liked to drink beer and get laid. The best of us would not set up eternal torment at all. Your God is less worthy than the best of his admittedly very imperfect human creations. I refuse to worship him on moral grounds.
