What is all this "hate" business? Most people I know have no need for hate at all. New Zealand and Australia have a long standing rivalry in just about every sport. We are easily recognised in each other's countries by our accents and there are plenty of New Zealanders in Australia and vice versa. While the rivalry exists between the countries, away from home New Zealanders and Australians behave like close cousins and look after each other.
Things between them would be even better if New Zealanders would give up their sexual interest in sheep...

Its "big brother" syndrome.....you always want to beat the "big brother". Despite this I found I had more in common with auzzies when I went to the UK...(I was shocked and horified at first, since I have been brought up to "hate" them....ok love to beat them at Rugby, cricket, netball or league...in fact any sport).
We love to hate their accents...although kiwis are more tolerant of the oz accent than the other way (we hear it more on TV and accept it more), but we love to say that aussies say SEX for six (and they say we say SUX...true to a point). I personally find the auzzie accent more harsh.
Another thing a lot of kiwis say about too are australians are quite arrogant...This is seen as a fault in New Zealand (tall poppy syndrome...anyone who says they are fantastic will be cut down by media and public harshly! especially when any sign of weakness is shown).
When we beat the auzzies there is nothing better.....

I think Kiwis only "hate" Aussies in the same way Canadians "hate" the U.S. I think it is that the smaller country really does like to "stick it" to the bigger country when they can- in an underdog type way - but also they don't want to be seen as an "add on" to another country - they want to be known for their own individuality.

Since being on yahoo answers, I've come to love Aussies. When an American claims yahoo answers to be soley theirs, you can always be sure an Aussie will be in there with an intelligent answer. We don't hate Aussies. We hate loosing!

No, no. We don't HATE aussies. They are our big brothers from across the way. We have an intense rivalry with them that is all. When it comes down to it, we fought alongside eachother in the war and have a strong respect for each other.
Apart from the Aussie's dingo shagging:-)

Because we beat them in every sport (in return for when they beat us)
Nah... really, we don't hate each other. You heard wrong. Whoever told you must have been an Brit all from their jealousy because they don't have good looking sheep like the kiwis and they don't have any dingos like us aussies.
tentofield and ELM - you both got it spot on!
