This can cost you your job. Are you married? Is your colleague? The risks are high even if you are both single. You said "love affair," not relationship. An affair is usually more about desire than love. The fact that you wrote this indicates that you know the right answer. Good luck.

We all know that by default it’s a tricky situation, but if it didn’t work out then so many people wouldn’t marry their coworkers. How many colleges have professors who are married, how many teachers did we have growing up in high school that were Mr and Mrs Soandso (I think its Japanese, but can’t be sure. They are a great couple though.). The complications are if its in the same department, between a boss and a subordinate, etc etc. If there is favoritism, that’s immoral and just pisses the rest of us off. If you can be mature about it and it doesn’t affect through effects (verb producing nouns) then its called life.

Workplace romance is hard, especially if there is a break up. All aspects of our lives are effected by love (even affairs) including the workplace.

When in ANY work situation make a "rule" that you NEVER cross such a line. It may lead to great disappointment.
