The real reason is that it says Microsoft, need not say more, but really, think of it this way..
Your a store, you paid $50 bucks wholesale for the O/S. And yes this is the real cost wholesale for windows on a small level, some big stores like best buy only pay about 10-20 when in bulk... anyways, you pay $50 bucks.. and your selling it.. and it sits and sits and sits.. then the new os comes out and you pay another $50 on that.. ok.. now you still have old product. Some companies say lets get rid of it cheaper so we can get it off our shelves.. Most companies will not go down on old software from microsoft untill at least a year has gone by.. I have even seen a few places to this day, still having Windows 98 Se for full value from back then sitting on their shelf in current time with full MSRP tring to sell it.. so bottom line is alot of stores dont really sale that much O/S products so when they have to cut the price on something it really cuts a big loss on their end. And other than that.. Alot of people wont even buy vista untill after a year or 3. Still giveing the customers the option for either or..

This is because a lot of users and businesses wont upgrade to Vista until it has been out in the 'wild' for a while and till more companies start making software for it. At the moment there are just too many risks for an upgrade to be favourable.
As a result Microsoft and software vendors will continue to milk money out of people buying Windows XP for as long as possible.

Because they have not worked out the bugs in Vista yet. So the sales on Vista are still low. When the sales pick then the price will go down.

They still have overhead to cover (advertising, paying coders, market research, --->lawsuits<--), etc. $160 is for the professional version too and 160 is also because people selling aren't lowering the price because then they'd lose money (keep in mind they probably paid $140 for it themselves when it was newer). You can buy OEM versions for around $90.00 though that don't come with the box. Pretty expensive box.

Hi Claudio,
Because of two things,
1. Bill Gates is a greedy SOB.
2. Vista has more holes in it than a whore house in Hong Kong China. :>)
Note: Time for Gates to be working on a Vista replacement, and the beat goes on, and on, and on . . . . . . . . . . . . !
All his work is outsourced to places where everyone's name is Haji.
He should have stuck with being an IBM DOS programmer, that does not require any brain power to speak of.

Because it is Microsoft. As long as its source code is not revealed, it can dictate the prices. Why do you think Microsoft is the richest company in the world? If you want free operating system - switch to Linux. And if you want free office software - switch to OpenOffice.org from MIcrosoft Office.

Windows is one of the very few products that Microsoft actually makes money on.
