Many Christians would claim that God creates Adam and Eve with the capacity to make decisions for or against what is good so that they might truly know what it is to love and to be virtuous-- qualities of human existence that must be freely chosen, rather than conditioned or coerced. The decision of God is to create a relatively free moral agent, which God does, knowing that there is the potential for decisions against what is good. The alternative would be to create a humanity that would be without the capacity for moral judgement, but also without freedom, love or virtue. God does not create humanity so that they might fall, he foresees the possibility, but also foresees the possibilities of love and virtue that will come from the creation of relatively free moral agents.

Many Christians would also assert that the story does not end with the fall, but that God works through even the fall of humanity to achieve his purposes and to offer humanity a share in the divine life. This is what many Christians believe the revelation of Christ is all about.

No one can coerce you to believe any of this and it seems that you have deep convictions about the veracity of this account of God's nature, creation, and its meaning for human existence. My advice to you, however, is, if you are going to be an atheist, be an intellectually rigorous atheist, and this means being able to present what actual Christian and other theistic or supernatural beliefs are all about. Don't rely on caricatures as a base for your arguments or you will not be taken seriously. And if your beliefs as an atheist are as important to you as they seem to be, being taken seriously is something that you want working in your favor.

Our Father in Heaven knew Adam and Eve would fall. In fact, the Prophet Joseph Smith taught that Adam “was made to open the way of the world” (Teachings, 12). Lehi tells us, “Adam fell that man might be; and men are, that they might have joy” (2 Ne. 2:25). Modern scripture makes it clear that it was the will of the Father, as part of his plan, that Adam and Eve transgress and thus be moved out of Eden. Satan thus unwittingly furthered the plan, “for he knew not the mind of God” (Moses 4:6).

God did it to frame Eve. God knew a male companion would have been better for Adam, but god wanted a fake reason to make Adam and Eve have sex. God allowed the snake to trick her, god knew Eve was gullible since god created her. He then punished both for Eve's actions by cursing Adam to have orgasms and Eve to reproduce.

Or, more likely, it was just some story trying to guess why people are here.

God gave humans free will to make their own choices. Eve was tempted and ate the forbidden fruit, thus bringing sin into the world. God does not impose His will upon anyone, we simply must choose to follow it. I'm praying for you.

God did not "let" them.
look at it this way: You have a hand full of candy. You give all but one piece to a little kid. This piece happens to have a tantalizingly shining and brightly colored wrapper. You put it right in front of them and say "there's your candy, but don't eat this one." You know this kid is going to take it, but that doesn't mean that you "let" him.
God knew that they would do it, even though he told them not to. But he also planned it. Even in perfection, God was letting the human race know that outside him and without him we were lost.

P.S. did you know that every theory of evolution has been proved wrong, but NO ONE has ever proved any part of the Bible wrong? ;)

Arthur's response was well expressed. Among God's greatest gifts to mankind was the agency to act for ourselves, but having the consequences to accept for whatever pathway we choose.

So it was for Adam and Eve, and God knew that the first parents had to transgress to fulfil His commandment of multiply and replenish the earth. By this transgression you and I are able to sit here and talk about it.

However, since God is all knowing he knew Eve would fail. Why then did he create an imperfect creature and, if she was intended to be imperfect, why the punish her for a mistake she was designed to make?

Well I assume you have nor ever will discipline your children. It won't matter if they take your wallet and spend all your money, run up bills on the credit card to the limit, play soccer on the highway. You won't say a word.
