I was walking the dog in the park when I saw a little girl walking with her dad, she was around 10 and wearing a tight top, skinny jeans tucked into heeled boots and a smart jacket.
And what were they talking about?
She was telling him how to make a 'caterpillar' out of daisies!
It just struck me as such a contradiction from her dress to her converstation, it was really sad.

I think it is sad that parents allow it. I think it better for children to learn they are beautiful people from inside out before having to feel pressure to dress smartly.

Fashion has truly evolved over the decades, and not necessarily for the better. While I was growing up (I'm 47 now) you never saw children dressed in anything black, it was all pastels. There's nothing wrong with a child to be "turned out well"but its a parent's duty to see that its age appropriate. From what you overheard of the discussion between the little girl and her father it sounds as though at least mentally she has her innocence intact. It is possible with some of today's fashions for a child to still look like a child and still be stylish, once again though, its up to the parents. Unless the world today somehow ceases to be a material/appearance oriented place seeing miniature adults running around isn't likely to change. Sad but true.

I only think it's sad when the grown up clothes the kids are wearing are clothes that, if worn by an older person, would be sexually provocative. The example cited above of the young girl in a mini skirt and tank top is an example.

However, if a young girl wants to wear grown-up clothes just to look like Mommy, then what's the problem? Really, as long as the clothes are decent and cover any and all areas that would attract a pedophile, then I don't see much of a problem.

I agree. Some kids want to be adults before they are even teenagers.

It is sad, childhood lasts such a very short time, and you have the rest of your life for adulthood and all that entails.

I think that is why so many adults do such childish things because they somehow missed out on such things when they were kid.

Also I don't think it is very wise to be letting your children dress so adult in these times of crimes against children.

Have you noticed that a lot of the ads for children, especially for girls, have make-up etc as part of the toy.

I couldn't agree more. I see kids dressed even at age 6 or 7 in clothing styles I wear at 20 and some brands I can only afford after saving for them. I think its disgusting and sad and parents are not teaching their children the value of money and not making them wait to experience things for older teenagers just makes me wonder what these kids will be doing when they are 16 and 17 if they already dress like that when they are in elementary school. Its scary.

Unfortunately, childhood is very short these days.

Many years ago you were still a child at 16 but now it stops around 12 at the latest.
Children look older, act older, talk older and in some ways that's a good thing as they are (usually) more responsible but with that comes all the pressures that young children shouldn't be loaded with.

My childhood was much more about playing with friends and making our own amusement, children of now expect to be entertained by something be it a games console or to be taken somewhere like a Zoo.

I'm sure that the kids of today will be saying the same thing about their children in twenty years time.

I don't actually think it's the childs or parents fault most of the time. I was shopping with my younger sister and was shocked at some of the clothes available! Shops selling childrens clothes stocked high fashion items in sizes as small as 5/6yrs, they were just like the clothes a 20 year old would wear! If these clothes are being sold who can blame the children for buying them.

Hi Emily yes I brought this subject up a few months back as I think that it is awful seeing the young having their childhood stripped from them.

What the answer is I have no idea. It is the sign of the times.

Don't be surprised if you receive a lot of nasty replies from irate parents telling you to mind your own business.

I watch in dismay the young girls of no more than eight struggle with big heavy bags and wearing these fashion boots pass my window on their way to school.

Can you imagine it.... They will have back problems, suffer from round shouldera and have corns and mishapen feet time they reach their teens most of them.

I blame the schools for not providing adequate lockers for the children to keep their school stuff in, so they do bot have to lug it forward and back everyday. And the parents for letting themselves being pressurised by the youngsters in letting them wear these fashion boots to school.

Yes its sad, but the media and shops know that they can cash in on little girls who want to dress and behave like adults. Its not nice at all, the wide economic market are sexulising and exploiting the vulnerable. Children should be children for as long as possible, because once they come adults they will realise how easy it was to get sucked up into the mass media concept of maturity. Have you notice though that they always seem to target young girls!!!!

It is sad. Children need to ENJOY their childhood...... not act like a grown up!!

I also DO NOT think that we should be modeling behavior that says to our children that "only women or men who are 10, 15, or 30 pounds UNDERWEIGHT are acceptable"!! Actually, it is as unhealthy as being overweight. I'm not condoning overweight people, either. I just think we should concentrate on our children BEING HEALTHY!!!

And we should know that EVERYONE is made different. Some people are at a healthy weight for their heigth & bone mass if they are 18 & weigh 105 lbs & others are healthy if they weigh 150 lbs.

It's all about being HEALTHY!!

well I'm 12 and most of the girls in my class wear really horrible stuff. like frilly mini skirts and tight tops.it's pretty gross.but i guess we should have the freedom to wear what we want, providing that it's not too grown up.
still,I'd rather see a 10 year old wearing skinny jeans than some off the stuff I've seen around lately..
