To be honest with you, my Windows XP is not genuine too. But it works perfectly fine. You should install the Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 version. That is much better than other versions.

Unfortunately, yes you will loose all your data which you have right now provided you keep some backups Or create a separate Hard Drive partition and load the Windows XP on the other partition.

well, if it is listed a no longer genuine, then that means that there are definetly some issues with the legiticmacy of your version. Depending on which version of windows you are using there is a different way of going about fixing this, but before reintalling you should investegate more carefully and mabey email microsoft costumer support because microsoft typically doesnt send alerts like that so that could mean that you have a virus or other malicous software on your system and should try to run a virus scan, then scan with the programs AdAware from Lavasoft and then with Spybots S&D which can be downloaded from www.download.com for free. If the copy is truly no longer genuine then that means that the software is either being used on other systems, or that the software's registered owner is a buisness that has disolved, or that the software is regitered on another system. If it registered on another system then installing in on your system with out removing it fromt the other system is illegal and you should see where it is registered and then decide which system you want to run it on, but first contact microsoft and if it is registered on another system, consult your lawyers before taking any actions.

Back up all personal data to CD / DVD.

Buy a legal copy of XP, if you don't have one, and install it.

Call your ISP if you can't get on the web, then, update XP.

Install all required programs like Yahoo Messenger.

Transfer all personal data from CD / DVD.

I had this same issue too. If your XP is not authentic, then the only option you have is to buy a real copy. You can format and reinstall XP, but when it comes to Authentication your OS, the bullet stops there. You cant do Updates. I tried to do this and it didn't work. Get a real copy. I think their $99.00 now.

i think that would not solve your main problem. If microsoft detected your copy of windows is not genuine then it can detect it again after some time after you re-installed your OS.. The best thing you can do is buy a genuine copy of Windows.

i know a way how you can make your pirated copy of windows appear to be genuine...but of course i would not tell you that coz it's illegal my friend...

cheers!

You will have to reinstall all the programs you installed after the initial installation of windows, if you have your files backed up then you will need to restore the files to their respective locations.
