If I am a passenger in a vehicle, and we are pulled over, sometimes the officer askes for I.D.'s of everyone in the vehicle. If I do not have one, but I give him (or her) my information, does the officer call it in to dispatch to check me out? Or do they type the info in on their "in-car" computer?

If he's asking for an ID, he will probably check it. If they have the computer in the car, they can get the information themselves. If not, then they have to ask the dispatcher to run it.

Let's work with the scenario that there is a computer in the squad car, and the system is up (working). Asking for I.D. will verify who you are, where you are from, and your age. Without I.D., or asking, why do you want to see it, will arouse suspicion. With the I.D. in his hand, the Officer can run general information on his radio, while still keeping an eye on everyone. The computer will show specifics, such as a warrant, without broadcasting it (safety factor).

I think this would depend on what type of a system the Police Department is using in your area. EVERYONE is required to carry a valid photo ID at ALL times in California & most other states, as far as I know. A person without one is a red flag & usually gets the once over from the Officer & a citation for not having one (ID)! You can even be arrested until your true identity is established. Attitude is everything. I speak from the experience standpoint of being caught many times without my own ID.

Lets not forget that the police officer is there to protect and serve. It depends on why the car was pulled over. Underage drinking is a real problem in the US most states have made it illegal for minors to posses alcohol. If there are curfew laws that may be another reason to check Id's . Don't always assume that they are picking on anyone, there had to be a reason to stop the car or they would not do it. Rest assured that the license plate was already "run" before he exits his/hers car.

If a cop get's behind you, he can always find a reason to pull you over. This is how the law is set up. You could turn your signal to turn only 75 feet away from the turn, where the law requires 100 feet of notice... ding ding lights come on.... this is real common at 3 am. I noticed when I would work nights coming home at 3 am on weekends, I was pulled over twice and asked if I had anything to drink. They run my name in there car, I come back negative local/county... and they let me go... no ticket, nothing... they run everybody in the car. If you don't have ID your going to be questions to verify who you are.

My brother got pulled over a few times, he was wanted by the police and he knew my social security number, date of birth, basically everything! I see my name in the paper for running a stop sign... I called the police and... they said I would have to file charges against my brother... couldn't do it! But now they know he is a.k.a ME. So if I ever get pulled over, I am going to have a hell of a time if I don't have ID.... but I do... and I am legal.. so its all good.

If the department has the technology in the vehicle...yes they can check either by the in-vehicle computer system or by calling dispatch.

Either way is acceptable!

Best wishes.

Could be either one. If the officer has a working computer in his car, he'll use that, otherwise he calls dispatch and they run it.

They will call it in or type it in and get the same results and may even pull the driver out and ask about you. If your info is sketchy you will go to jail until they find out who you really are.

I would think that they would check all passengers in the vehicle.

Yes, sometimes. If your name pulls up with a warrant, you need to have other identification, social security number, drivers license, or state id to prove who you really are or you will be taken into custody until you can prove your identity. My advice, carry your id at all times.
