I want to get a new PC because mine is getting a bit old and has a few nagging problems.

I really like the XP operating system and have heard mixed reviews about Vista.

My question is, would it be a good idea to buy a brand new PC with XP on it instead of Vista? If everything in the future is going to revolve around Vista more than XP, I guess I'd rather go with Vista (reluctantly).

Thanks!

I have Vista and do not have any problems, it works great and I actually like the new features. Most people who are knocking Vista do not own it and have never even used it. Mostly people who are experiencing problems are large coorporations with many old software and networking issues.

Hey there,

My experience with Windows systems is the first version of any new operating system is buggy. If you can hold off buying until they have released Vista and enough of the problems have been worked out, then you might want to. Unless you don't mind things not working correctly right out of the box and having to troubleshoot.

Otherwise, if you absolutely want to buy now, you could get a good deal on an XP loaded machine and upgrade later when the kinks have been worked out (just make sure you buy as much machine as you can afford in terms of CPU speed, memory, and disk space).

I work on both Macs and PCs and have come to this place in life where I don't typically buy a machine during the conversion phase between the old and new platform. There is just too much work attached to it for me and I don't have the time for it.

Cheers!

Buying a PC with XP at this point is not a good idea. Every piece of software or hardware produced from now on will be designed especially for Vista. In a few years XP will be totally obsolete. Just like now no one uses Windows 98 anymore. If you get an XP computer, sooner or later you'll have to upgrade to Vista.

well,
XP has alot of protective stuff on it like norten (i think thats how you spell it) internet security and things and it just has all the usual things on it what most computers have, but i have a vista laptop and it has brand new games and most things are already loaded on it, but vista does have a few problems with it too, like if you are a big fan of msn messenger it doesnt let you work that but if you click on help (it will just pop up telling you to click this) it will tell you how to stop this, anyhow, xp is just the same as anyother computer whereas vista is the new one and like you said, it will probably be the new big thing soon and if you want to get the latest updates staright away thenn i would go for a vist PC but if you aren't really bothered and would just go for whichever is the craze at the moment then go for XP, but if you think about it, XP has been around since year 2000 and vista has just came out, so basically, its up to you!! ♥☺♦☺♥

Depending on where you get the machine you may not have a choice.

If you do go with XP. Vista comes in many flavors and most of them are currently useless. The adoption of Vista has not met with Microsoft's expectations and they are basically shoving it down the throats of consumers (hence my comment on choice).

Even though there are many versions of Vista it basically runs in 2 modes (classic and Aero). Classic is similar to XP. Aero is the pretty presentation mode. No apps have been written to Aero yet. Even Office 2007 runs in Classic mode. This is because the the graphics interface has been totally changed. To run in Aero mode you need a beefy machine also.

Stick with XP, if you were thinking of Vista for a 64 bit OS, get XP Pro 64.

Well you are right, things will be ported only for Vista in days to come. I would wait until summer time when Microsoft hopefully will release the first service pack for vista.
If you want to stick with Xp until then, you should hurry! Not many PC manufacturers offer XP preinstalled!

Yes, I'd stick with XP for now. Vista is just not worth it. Other than being visually appealing, Vista really has very little else going for it. Any machine will perform better at pretty much any application running XP SP2. Besides, most of the security issues have been hashed out on XP, Vista is a whole new ballgame, and the security partners (Symanetc, etc.) haven't been allowed to review the source code for the kernel.

Win XP with SP2 is Safe and Secure where as Vista is Fun and Future.

You can decide based on your work.

If you dont have any critical data and dont mind formatting your PC once or twice in the next 2-3 months go with Vista.

If you use Intenet. Be extra care ful and get a good firewall and antivirus and update the antivirus regularly.

Well, Vista has quite a number of glitches and, if you are using your computer for some serious work, I'd advise you not to buy Vista.
I suggest you get a comp with XP and later upgrade it to Vista if you want to.
Vista looks good, but runs flimsy.

If you buy a PC with Vista installed, you should be OK.

Check for Vista drivers for your Printer and other plug-in devices FIRST, they may not be available yet.

XP with a Vista upgrade coupon is also a good choice, if you can find one.
