The 6" will take 1 box.
The 8" will take 1 and a half boxes.
The 10" will take 2 and a half boxes.
The 12" will take 4 boxes.
There are many things you can do to make box mixes moister and tastier. Send me a message if you'd like any tips, or visit www.cakecentral.com for some great cake advice, from baking to decorating.

If I remember correctly, the back of the box has instructions for baking in two 9" pans, but those pans are usually only an inch deep. I'd guess you'll need 1 box for the 8 inch, probably two boxes to split between the 6 and 10 and another 2, maybe 3 for the 12 inch. Just remember, since you need to stack the cakes, you don't want to make them too moist. Don't do anything like substitute apple sauce for the oil. Your cake will end up too soft and the whole thing will collapse. If the layers are going to be stacked directly on top of one another, you may want to consider putting a wooden dowel straight down the middle to help with the support. (Only the first 3 layers, the couple needs to be able to take the top.) No one will ever know it it in there.

Just a side note, I am a pastry chef, and when I started out I was using boxes to help me learn to decorate. I got tired of the box taste, so I added one box of jello pudding to every 2 boxes of cake. This will give you a rich flavor or a hint of a different flavor if you are using white cake. 5 boxes should be enough if you are going to have layers in the cake. Do you have the stands and/or pedestals??? If not the cake will never hold up the weight.

Well, you don't use a mix to make a homemade cake. You need to bake the cake from scratch for layer cakes, so it's a richer, better cake and will stand up well. Mixes are too fluffy - and everyone will know it's a mix.

5 boxes - use the white cake and egg whites instead of trying to divide the eggs for a beautifully white cake.
