"out there" meaning hard rock or too preachy?

Depends what type of music you like. For myself I am into the harder stuff so I would say my favorites are Thousand Foot Krutch, Demon Hunter, and Apologetix. If they have even the most meager open mind, non-Christians should like Apologetix. Apologetix takes non-Christian songs and does parodies of them, and they still sound a lot like the original I think they are the most talented band around. Sure there are bands whose songs I like more, but I think Apologetix has the most actual talent.

As for other bands, there is Kutless, Relient K has a huge following though I am not really a fan, Jeremy Camp, FM Static, Ever Stays Red, Skillet, etc.

If you want, go to effectradio.com and click on their top 44, or go to Christianrock.net and see their top songs, also they have Christianhardrock.net and I think Christianhiphop.net but I may be wrong on the address, there is a link on their page though.

Relient K and the Newsboys don't stray too far from pop in terms of style, but the content is great. If you don't listen to the lyrics and just focus on the music, you could hardly tell you're listening to a Christian group.

if you mean that "aren't too out there" as a mean of "underground" or "non-mainstream" then it is hard for me since most of "my bands" (which 90% are christian) are mainstream, i don't know which are more or less mainstream though so i'll give you my main list:
Switchfoot
The Afters
Barlow Girl
Sonicflood
Rebecca St. James
Jeremy Camp

Personally I love Petra....they were considered wild in the early 80's....but now you'd probably just call it "soft" rock.

Relient K rocks, though their new album is disappointing.
