oh I have to answer this. I loved my personal trainer and could talk all day about the positive aspects of a trainer. If you have someone who is educated, serious about helping their clients, and you are willing to make the committment, it could be a really great thing. A good trainer will be professional and stick to the matter at hand, your training. He or she will not constantly cancel or reschedule on you, therefore making you all the more accountable, they are up on the all the best new moves, and can show you how to do them properly. Their focus is on you for the entire session and not what is going on around them. They have the ability to push you beyond what you think you are capable of, and this helps you not only look better but feel more confident about what else you could accomplish in your life. Mine was all of this and more. He did not take my crap, and pushed me because he knew I could do it. How he knew, I'm not sure, but he did. The personal training experience brought me to another level physically and emotionally. I am extremely proud of what I accomplished through training and that feels good. This worked because I was committed, so was he, and I trusted him. He didn't care how sweaty and disgusting I got, and I wasn't trying to impress him. I would recommend personal training to anyone who is serious about reaching their goals.

I had a personal trainer before and loved it. I got tons of great advice and new workout ideas I hadn't tried before. She helped motivate me when I just didn't wanna work out. And if you are seriously overweight--they know more about how much your body can take (you tend to think you are too tired long before you have actually burned enough calories to matter) and they help vary the workout when you hit a plateau in your weight loss.
They are expensive though and not worth it if you just have that extra 10-15 that you want to lose.
