If your survival depends intimately upon the environment in which you live, a keen awareness of the interrelationships between the many component parts of that environment is essential.
Spirituality and an 'understanding' of the world around you go hand in hand.
Mythology, which often has it's roots in folk lore, is an essential part of man's relationship with the 'cosmos'.
This is beginning to sound like the beginnings of an anthropology PhD thesis.
The simple truth is, it's a great question, but it'd take some time to do it justice, and answer in depth.
So I'll try and summarise.
How did the relationships develop? Man has a built in curiosity. The easiest way to satisfy that is to find a plausible reason. Science or myth, take your pick.
The spiritual purpose of a 'relationship' with the environment? If everything is 'sacred', everything has a worth, a value. It also has a 'story' attached to it, usually outlining the actual 'use' of the thing, be it plant, animal, etc.
Very basic summary, I know, but I hope it goes some distance.
Cheers.

The importance developed as a logical understanding of the world/universe and how we relate to it... and it doesn't just serve for "indigenous peoples" it SHOULD serve for everybody. By dualistically removing ourselves from the equation, for self-cherishment/serving purposes, we do ourselves a HUGE disservice.

I don't know how to answer your question. I will say, though, that this interrelatedness - which many of the so-called scientific thinking atheists on this site laugh at - has been proven numerous times by quantum physics. There is literally no physical difference between you, me, the rocks, the trees, the stars, or any other object. We are all just swirling masses of energy.

This looks like a homework question. I refuse to help someone with homework when they should be educating themselves.
