You have to think of the solution in 3 dimensions. Use 12 matchsticks and make a cube, this can be done with 12 matchsticks which will give you 6 equally sided squares, one for each side of the cube...

Gravity will be a problem.

But think of something that has 6 squares (or sides) and 12 edges.
