It can take a while. The standard if you are under 50 is tht you cannot work full time even in the most sedentary of jobs.

For me, it took 2 1/2 years from first application. I was turned down twice requested a hearing and was awarded benefits by the judge. I am terribly anemic and transfusion dependent.

Your best bet is to get a lawyer who specializes in disability from the start. There is one national firm, which I used and they did a good job.

One thing I learned is you have to answer the questions in the context of working full time, not in terms of a maximum effort.

I wish you good luck

With SSI I can only get about $800 a month which makes it 10K per year. With a minimum wage job now that it is $7.15 an hour. I figure I can get more than 15K per year. The lawyer takes about 20 percent after waiting more than 2 years and he does not do much. With me and my wife working I feel I will be better off financially working with my disabilty. I have 2 disc herniations one in my back and one in my neck presing on my spine and this was from an accident. I also refused surgery as my brother had a bad outcome after surgery

My nephew passed away at 10 1/2 months old from a birth defect and we put in his SS when he was like a week old. By the time he passed he still didn't have it settled. I think it took about a year and a 1/2 for the paperwork to start it's process. Of course by then for us it was too late. It does take a long time so be ready.

You will have to prove that you can't work by not working for over a year. That's just the government way of thinking. My brother in law waited 18 months, but then got retroactive pay from the time that he applied for SSI.

I was told it could take up to a year , but they pay you from the time you applied once approved. You can get help from your county welfare department for immediate needs.

People get disabled at all sorts of ages. Its not like you did anything deliberately and I would bet you would prefer to be healthy :)

SSRI's are for depression. Are you depressed? If so then yes they will help.
