It's a natural instinct.

Well its a cat thing. Even though they don't have an claws...the instinct to sharpen their claws is always there. Sort of like when someone has a limb amputated and they still have those phantom pains or whatever ..where the limb moves. Anyways...your cat will probably always do it.

One of the places that cats have scent glands is in their feet. When they paw at objects, like you described, they are marking their territory. Just like when they rub their faces and bodies up against objects in the house. It's a very common and natural instinct, nothing to be worried about.

My cat Emma is a girl European Shorthair and she is 2 1/2 and she also does that...This is because this is what they are born to do also because if someone is playing roughfly with him he will show that he has claws and he will use them...So there is nothing to worry about...The best part is whatever or wherever they claw something it won't get destroyed...I love my cat to death, but when she does this it annoys me a lil lol you..?

It's the same as when a human has an amputation but still has "sensations" in the lost limb. It's called Phantom feeling. Your cat doesn't really know he doesn't have claws so he's doing what is natural. Good luck and God Bless.

I'm sorry but declawing a cat is incredibly cruel. The procedure is not a simple removal of the nail, it is the amputation of the toes. Extremely painful and the cat basically has to learn how to walk again. Get a scratching post for Christ's sake.

If you got him declawed later in life it may just be a habit. Cats naturally prance and paw some just never stop. Depending on what/when he claws may also be a sign of contentment. Cats knead when they're happy. Just be glad you had him declawed!!

It's a habit. It's also a way to exercise his front legs.

Both of my cats are declawed. I laugh when they try to fight with the furniture and let them go for it.

All cats will do this. It is natural and it feels good on their paws. Just think of it as a masssge for their feet.

Cats do that naturally, with or without front claws. They love to stretch too. It's exercise and gives them pleasure. It feels good after you wake up to have a nice stretch? Same concept.
