take chicken across
take food across return with chicken
take fox across
take chicken across
What I have always wondered about this riddle is why the chicken and the fox don't escape when the man is away? And if he has them tethered why doesn't he simply tether them far enough apart so that he only has to make five trips across the river instead of seven?

That is easy. One possible answer is that they are already on the other side of the river. Another answer (more plausible), is that the man first takes the fox, then takes the chicken food, and finally the chicken.
