no it's not "hello" so I explain hello is "salut" in French you say hello or salut when you know the person a friend for exemple ... and you say bonjour = good morning, good afternoon and good evening= bonsoir you can use it all the day !!! and you say this to be polite so when you don't know the person or when you arrive in a shop or something like this !!!
I hope you understand because my english is not the best !!and when you hear "bonjour" you can answer "bonjour" because even if it's the same word it's polite to answer at the people who are kind with you !!!

Bonjour is French for Hello. You can respond by saying 'bonjour' back or another version is 'salut' (pronounced salloo)

It means good day in french. after dusk you say bonsoir (good evening) and bonne nuit (good night). Good morning is also bonjour.
You should answer the same way = bonjour!

"Bonjour" is "Goodmorning" in French, and not "Hello" !
You must answer "Bonjour! Comment vas-tu ?" (=Goodmorning ! How are you ?)
