Aside from the people who like to waste people's time by placing idiotic answers here, I will try to answer this the best way I can.
First you have to know where your third eye is. For some it's in between the eyebrows and for some it's in the middle of your forehead but a little higher than your eyebrows.
What you have to do is meditate. There are a lot of ways to meditate but I find the simplest way to meditate is to lay down and make yourself as comfortable as you can. Inhale deep and slowly exhale through your mouth. Do this several times until you can feel yourself relaxing. This can be done for about 30 min. Make sure you have no distractions. After that, just let your eyes roll to the top of your head. You will feel a pulling sensation. If it's uncomfortable for you by all means, stop. Your eyes are going to blink profusely so it's best to probably cover your eyes as gently as possible.
When you start seeing lights and images( you will see these) make sure you don't get too excited because once you do, you will lose those images quick.
You also might want to get a crystal quartz and place it in the middle of your forehead while you meditate.
And last but not least, if you're impatient like me, apply pressure to your eyes with your hands and focus on the images. A lot of the times you will be able to see images. It will make your eyes hurt but hey, at least you've seen something.

Third eye is the pineal eye. Not sure how it is spelled. Spellcheck says it is ok. That is the eye that is the hardest to open. God gave us this eye to discern and to use as a spiritual eye. Some things that look right, like going to church and living a good life, looks good to the world, right? But, look through the pineal eye, and find the reasons you are doing these things. Not for show, not because it is what you should be doing, but what your heart tells you to do. To open your pineal eye, open your heart. Listen without seeing. That makes a big difference in situations. Hope you understand what I am trying to say.

Don't mind all these idiots giving you crap answers. I know exactly what you're talking about. Most religions have their own version of this but you first have to give up any mindset beliefs that you already have, study on it, obtain information and become enlightened. I read somewhere that you can stare and concentrate on a candle's flame in the dark and then close your eyes and focus on the after-image, or whatever. Doing this alot is suppose to do something to your mind...makes you have unlimited insight and helps develop a psychic sense. I have no clue exactly what to do though. Find an expert online and find out from him instead of a bunch of little kids on YaHoo!Answers... yea

Speaking from a Tibetan Buddhist point of view (where the "third eye" is a commonly used expression), the "third eye" is definitely meant to be thought of as a physical reality (like in the completely false descripions in the books by the notorious "Lobsang Rampa"). The "third eye" is nothing but a symbolic expression of "having wisdom", which is expressed as "seeing with the wisdom eye". So, if you want to "open your wisdom eye", you have to develop wisdom through study of Buddhist philosophy and meditating. And without also cultivating compassion your efforts will prove useless.

Your third eye is always functioning and naturally open and aware. It is simply that as you come back in tune with you, you become aware of what you are seeing on an energy level, as well as the physical level which you see with your physical eyes. It requires you to trust in your awareness and your knowingness and to believe in you on all levels.

If you want a shortcut I've heard that taking acid(lsd) works, as it breaks down the barrier between your conscious and unconscious mind, making it easier to feel more in touch with the spiritual third eye.
I've never tried this though so it's idle speculation.

Think without prejudice.
Don't get fooled by what people say.
Always have a thirst to know the truth
Be unbiased in your thoughts
And last but not least, have faith in God.
