It is a wonderful place to raise a family. The islands are alot more mellow then most places in the mainland. The prices are high though but at the very least most of the wages compares with the cost of living. A move to Hawaii would make you wonder why you had ever lived elsewhere.

Hawaii is a wonderful and very unique place to raise a family. There are a lot of selling points but keep in mind some drawbacks.

For all of it's diversity, it's a very provincial location. If you move there, you do not instantly become one of them. You will be an outsider for quite some time before being accepted.

It's a very expensive place to live as everything is imported, even the chocolate macadamia nuts. There are not a lot of great job opportunities, and even less for outsiders. You better have a very good set "needed" job skills or you might be moving back rather quickly. There is a reason most kids leave the islands to find a living, because there are not many on the islands.

The last big one is "island fever". Most people who move there get it early and have it for a long time. You are very isolated on the islands and you get a "alone" feeling. Believe it or not, you can easily run out of things to do and you can't just run off to Vegas every other weekend. Your extended family is far away and it can be hard on a person. You might be in Paradise but it sure won't feel like it after a couple of months.

Raising a family in Hawaii is awsome. Sure if your comming from the mainland the price of living is CHEAPER compair to HAWAII, but people have to realize most of the products are shiped over to Hawaii so of course things will be expensive. Plus your place of emploment will = out with the price of living. The last time i was home (North Shore Oahu) the price of a gl. milk was about $4 or $5 bucks. and gas prices is the same with Cali. prices. Fresh air free beaches less crime then anywhere i know. Have fun!

Raising a family in Hawaii is a great idea! Hawaii is the melting pot of the Pacific and kids here learn to grow up with every color of people with prejudice.

As far as prices go, things are expensive here. It's the price of living in paradise. For example, a gallon of milk costs $6 and gas has been known to go over $3/gallon for regular gas.

Also, since we live on an island, the cost of housing is high because there is only a limited number of houses to own/rent. A studio apartment is renting for close to $2K/month (if you can find it!).

Hope this helps.......

Aloha,

Oahu living is no more expensive than most other places I have ever lived. Groceries, gas and housing are high, but no higher than in any big city. My wife & I are retired & we bought a condo for around $200,000, just minutes from downtown Honolulu. Salt lake area is very nice place to live.

If you shop & buy what's on sale, food is not too bad. Although I do admit we sneak onto the base to shop at the comissary when we can.

Good luck to you. It is a major change unless you have lived on an island before. As for this "Island fever" thing, it's all in your head. We have been here for years and will never be able to see everything on this island, let alone all the other island.

Mahalo!

It is really expensive. To rent a house alone is about 2-3 thousnad depending on the area.. But if you want to raise a family here, I think it is safer and better.
