Actually it has more to do with avoiding the laws and regulations of the US government. A "crossover" SUV is nothing more than the stationwagon of the 1970's. The term Crossover SUVs however allows automakers to not be required to meet the strict smog and emission standards set up for cars. An SUV is considered a truck and smog and emission standards have been a lot less restrictive on trucks because they were considered "working" vehicles back when emission laws were written.

By calling the modern stationwagon (a car based vehicle) a "Crossover" SUV, automakers have basically used words to find a solution around smog and emission laws that were more restrictive to cars.
