I am putting (2) 15's in my car and I wanna know what the differnce is between having an amp or not having an amp.

The word says it all. "amplifier" = "amplify". Basically it amplifies the sound that comes from your CD receiver making it to sound louder, with more power and increasing the quality of the music. If you have 2 15's definetly you need an amp otherwise your radio won't have enough power delivered to the speakers.

an amplifier is basically what the name imply's. it takes the signals from the music, and amplifies them in order to increase sound as well as quality. if you are putting subs in, you will need an amp or more that can match the rms of the sub. you do not want to go over, but if you cant find any the right size, it is ok to go a little bit higher and just keep the gain down.

speakers also have a resistance (electrical weight) and the larger the motor structure (magnet, power handling capacity, impedance, sensitivity, and the list goes on) the more electrical weight is behind it. think of a music signal as a cars engine, and the speaker as the weight it will have to pull or push (move). you could put a 4 cylinder car motor in a semi truck, but how long would it last before you burnt the engine up? In other words, the electrical weight of a larger speaker is to heavy for a radio to handle and will eventually, even if the impedance (ohms) are correct, will burn the out put of your radio up without and amplifier to take the brunt of the load.

an amplifier gets more sound out of your subs than a cd player would. for example, a typical cd player can put out only 200 watts (50 for 4 channels), but with an amplifier it will put out as much as the amp can so if you but a 1500 watt amp and turn it up all the way your subs will play up to 1500 watts as opposed to a cd player which would only do about 100.

Built into your radio/CD Player/etc. is a lower power amplifier that takes the weak signal from the air or the CD and boosts it to enough strength to run the speakers installed in the car. If you want to run bigger speakers with more umph then you have to add one or more external amplifiers that take the ordinary speaker signal and boost it in power. If you take this to an extreme, you get the idiots who drive through my neighborhood thumping through the walls and preventing me from listening to my choice of music and TV.

easiest way to put it is more power. most after-market radios put out between 15-22watts rms per channel. amps put out much more. if you ran a 1000watt rms sub off the cd player you wouldnt even know its on, but on a 1000rms amp everyone on the block knows its on lol.
