Hello, I have a problem with my 3 month and a week old Golden Retriever. When we first got him when he was 2 months old, we used to keep him in the house in a caged out place in the living room. we used to let him out every 3-4 hours because I read from somewhere that it is advisable to do so. Now, when he became 3 months old, we made a cage outside on the patio with a dogloo house for him. We let him out of the caged area to play with him, and to let him use the bathroom everyday in the grass area around 5:30AM, 9AM, 12:30PM, 4PM, 6:30PM, 9PM, 12AM. But he manages to make a mess in his caged area all the time, and it's been hard to clean up after him everyday, somtimes several times a day! What can I do? HELP PLEASE

You have to expect messes at this stage, bedcause he's still just a puppy, and he's learning how to adapt to his new environment. You might want to try taking him out every hour on the hour, which is a big commitment, but it will be worth it in the long run. Every time he goes to the bathroom on the grass, make a big fuss over him and give him a little bit of a treat. When he has an accident in his Dogloo, DON'T yell at him- if you catch him in the act, point to the mess and say, "NO," in a stern voice, but don't ever rub his nose in it or smack him, or else he will start being afraid of you, and he also won't get what you're trying to get him to do. Always take him to the grassy area right after he has an accident in his little home, so he can get the idea that you want him to do his business there instead. It will take a while, but if you are consistent and diligent about it, he will eventually be trained.

In my opinion the reason he is doing this is because he's confused. First, it takes until about 5-6 mths old before a puppy is fully potty trained. You should keep him in a crate that is just large enough for him to stand or turn around, then you need to increase the size of the crate as he grows. If you're keeping him in an area he can run or play then try getting a puppy pee pad and place it inside with him. The pad will have an odor similar to puppy pee so he knows this is the only place to go. The pads will have directions for use. Hope this helps!

Your dog is still very young and most likely he just can not hold it that long. Puppys need to releive themselves about every 30 minutes somtimes. They are small and their bladders and bowels just do not hold much and they have to go.
If you are having problems cleaning up after him every day mabye you should not have gotten a dog. They take time a effort and they need training and walking and interaction with family. If he is caged up in a pen all the time he will learn to go when ever he has to. It is like raising one in a kennel. They learn to mess where they live and it is a very hard habit to break. He is spending far to much time in a pen on the patio.

Until they are at least 4 to 5 months old they can't hold it more than 3 to 4 hours. If he is also outside that is where you have taught him to go. Take it one step at a time. You also don't want him to have food and water in his crate, but on the other side of that you can't let them go without food and water for more than about 4 hours at a time either. If it's hot even less time than that for water. Instead of putting him outside, keep in in the house in his crate when you aren't watching him. It is great to crate train. It keeps them out of a lot of trouble and does cut your house training in half, but you don't want them to live in it either. I have a puppy that I've had from 6 weeks and she is in her crate only when I'm not able to watch her. You will get to know what your dog does when they need outside and that's when you let them out and praise big time when they go out where you want them to. They have to figure out how to tell you they want out.

He's still a baby!
He can't hold it in that long, and he probably doesn't yet understand that he's supposed to go outside.
You don't mention how often you feed him, or give him water but remember this: everything he consumes will eventually find it's way out.
Keep at it. Be patient and good luck.
