Yesterday I tried took a picture of my little sister wearing a pink had and tried to greyscale the image leaving only the pink hat in color. To do this I followed instructions from one web site where I split the image to RGB then darkened everything around the hat to isolate it. After that I brought the hat layer in to the greyscale image. It looked ok but i had a line around the hat. What am I doing wrong? Also is there an easier way? Thanks!

I'd just select the area I wanted to keep in color using the freehand selection tool, options smart edge and feather at 1-2 pixels.

Copy that selection, press Ctrl and C simultaneously.

Go to Colors on the toolbar and select Greyscale - everything turns Grey.

Go to Colors on the toolbar, go to Increase Color Depth, select 16 Million Colors - everything still looks grey.

Press your Ctrl and E keys simultaneously - the color selection from earlier is pasted back onto the picture.

Grab it with your mouse and line it up if needed.
