There was a baby bird in my drive way, i caught him and put him in a cage. He's calm, he lets you pet him. He's not very old, but does have all of his feathers. He can only fly about 2-3 feet at a time, which is why i brought him in. He ventured around in my driveway for about an hour or so and our dogs kept barking at him.
He's a normal any old day blackbird, what should I feed him?
Should I let him back out?
Should I take him to a vet?

Blackbirds are insectivorous. Go to your local pet shop and buy meal worms for him to eat. Insectivore Rearing Mix made by Wombarro or a product called Bugs and Berries would be a very good diet as well, but I don't know how readily available it would be in your area. It sounds to me like he is just a few days from fully flighted, so give him a good feed and a couple of days to rest up and then see if he can fly better.

There's a lot of "should have done" here.

You should have simply moved the bird to a protected place like into a thick bush. The parents would have found it and cared for it just fine.
It's been 3 hours since you posted this. The bird is suffering from dehydration and hunger.
PUT THE BIRD BACK OUTSIDE NOW.
There's a chance the parents will hear it and come back to feed it.
I would say more but you should feel bad enough about your interference and the possible fate of this baby.

Sorry to say this but what you SHOULD do is set it free.
Fledgling birds are watched over by their parents whent hey first leave the nest. First flight is only a few feet at a time and that is how they DO learn to fly.
It will more than likely not live if you keep it caged because it is a WILD creature and needs to be WILD.
IF you call or try to take it to a Vet, the vet will tell you to release it and in some areas it is against the law to capture or try to keep ANY wild creature.
Please do the decent, humane thing and let it be what it is meant to be...wild and free!!!!!!!!

If he is able to hop and walk but not able to fly far he is a fledgling and needs to be put back with it's parents.
If you noticed that he pooped normally (brown with white) that means that it's parents were taking care of it (feeding it)
and he is fine to go back.
What you do is find some low laying bushes or shrubs very close to where you found it. Put it in the bushes and watch OUT OF SIGHT for up to 1 hour to see if it gets a response from the parents. If you notice that there are bigger birds responding to it, leave it alone.
Fledglings leave the nest not able to fly, this a natural progression that they need to go through. Depending on the species they can spend up to 2 weeks on the ground building up their wing and breast muscles (that enables them to fly) the parents in the mean time will feed and protect them from predators.
It sounds like this might be a crow or a raven, if you heard a lot of screaming coming from the trees or surrounding area, those are the parent yelling at you. That means they are there caring for it and you were to large to fend off.
If you do not get a response from the parents, the babies poop was bright green or turquoise, or you have fed it ANY milk products,or you have had it for more then a day or 2, then you need to find a Wildlife Rehabber in your area.
E-mail me via my Answers Profile and I will be more then happy to help you further. I am a Wildlife Rehabber I specialize in sick, injured, and orphaned birds.
Keep in mind it is probably illegal for you to care for this bird along with Vets, if they are not permitted to do so.

I would call wildlife rehabilitation center in your town. Call information or look up in yellow pages. This bird will not survive without the proper care. This is the best thing for this baby bird as it will die if you don't feed it constantly. See what you can do to find the proper place for him.
Best of Luck

This is very important! You are violating a serious federal law by having this bird. The Migratory Bird Act prohibits possession of native birds without a permit. If you contact a veterinarian or your local humane society they can refer you to a licensed wild life habber. Sorry, I know you are trying to be kind, but you dont want to get in trouble.

you should have never brought it in, they eat worms, but i doubt you would want to cut them up and feed them to it, the vet wouldn't be able to do anything, just put it back outside and let nature take its course... I love animals but you can't save everything
