Hi, I currently have a small 1 year old maltese puppy and am planning to add a new maltese-poodle mix puppy to the family in a few months. However, I've heard so much about two female puppies not getting along etc. Is this true? Anyone have experience with two females of this breed? Our Maltese is very friendly, never barks, and is geniunely scared of anything that moves. Furthermore, my sister in law has a female maltese-yorkie mix, about the same age, who she gets along with very well.

Additionally any rules/ideas to follow when introducing the new puppy. i.e. the maltese now has the entire first floor when we are away from the house. Should I still crate train the new puppy? Is there any problem with leaving them alone together after a few months? Any resources available on this?

Thanks!

No experience with these breeds, but I've owned two females simultaneously. No problems really. The older dog will most likely become the dominant one.

You may want to leave the new puppy in the crate while they're alone, until you can be completely certain they'll get along together.

Before introducing the two dogs you should exercise each one separately. You and someone else should take them both for separate walks and meet somewhere in the middle. Have a formal introduction at a neutral site then walk them both to your house. If you have a yard I would leave them out longer so they tire out. Your Maltese is still young enough to play so they should get along. While they are in the yard set up the newbies home inside (crate train her) it will do your stress level some good.

I have two male dogs, one 8 y.o. and a 1 y.o. This is how I introduced them and it worked like a charm.

With the breed you have and are considering you should not have huge problems. The older one will most likley be the dominant one but not always.
These are not very pushy dominant dogs by nature.
My vet has 3 Malteses two feamles and one male and about 6 other dogs. They are all fine together no fighting. The maltese oldest female is the top dog and his favorite. She knows it and his house is as peaceful as you can get for having so many dogs.

HI
i have a Maltese and a Maltese peke mix, they get along great. I usually put them in a crate next to each other first and let them be like that for a day and then I introduce them after I have played with them and made them tired.

I have 2 females. One is dominant and one is submissive, therefore, it works. I had another female who was also dominant. She fought , tried to run off, and tried to kill my other dominant girl. I had to give one up.
Dogs mature at 2 yrs of age, so you will not know if you have a problem until about that time.
Why not get a male? He would have no problem with a female in the house. Just make sure to get both fixed.

they will get along although two females causes territorial problems one will want to be territorial of the yard an the other will be submissive but its natural just keep an eye on them when they are playing

no i have two small doxies and they are competitive but they are great together....if you introduce them young they should be fine...females dont fight ....of course one will be alpha but that is to be expected even if you had a male and female...my advice get another female and give them lots of attenion they will be best friends....when you get into trouble is when you have kennel dogs not pets...
