If its a danger they cant see, they will pace and the barking will be loud and fast. If they can see it, they will bark and growl at the same time and they will kind of crouch with their paws apart and sort of 'bounce' backward. A bark to see what is out there in a non worried way will be single barks at intervals, with a laid back body language as if to say 'i dont know what is out there but im not scared'. It really depends tho on what your dog sees as a threat, one of my dogs thinks that the shadow thrown by one particular branch on one particular tree is dangerous as hell. An excited bark is usually high pitched almost yappy with excited body language, pacing, going round in circles, jumping, sudden sprints and snapping at air.

If you listen to your dogs barking. There is ways he is barking, louder softer longer etc. You must start to listen to your dog to find out with of his barking is for which danger, people walking pass, for other dog's. You will learn fast the different between his barking and to indicate for what he is barking for. Good luck

There eyes will be fixed on something and the hair on their back is straight up and their tails are staight out. The bark will sound very different from what Fido usually does to the squirrels. He will continually bark untill the danger is gone.

You bet you can. You have to really know your dog. I have 9 Shih Tzu's I can tell by their bark if someone is just visiting, if they are just playing and if someone is there that is not suppose to be there, Or if they are barking to hear their little head rattles. I can tell which bark belongs to who. Once you learn their different kinds of bark it will save a lot of trips to the door. You can learn from your dog just as well as your dog learns from you.
