Previously, she had one that laid on the floor, but now she has one which is vertical.......and she won't use it. We tried putting her cat treats near it, but that doesn't work.

Some cats prefer to scratch horizontally while others prefer to scratch on a vertical post.
We have both types and three of my cats use both kinds, but the four only uses the one that lays on the floor.

When you see her scratching on something other than the post clap your hands and say "NO'" very loudly and firmly. then take her to the post and show her how to use it by rubbing her paws up and down on it.
That's the way we've trained all four of our cats to use a post.

BUT, with that said she may just prefer the horizontal type of post.

Good luck

rub dried catnip into the scratching post.

Or try a different scratching post. We have one that is wrapped with sisal rope - the original stuff, not the stuff made of plastic or nylon. I've replaced the rope on the post at least twice, because they have clawed it literally to hanging shreds. It's the best scratching post in the world.

You can buy one, or make your own - just take a boardabout 12-16 inches long, and wrap it with light sisal rope. It can be about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick, and that will work fine. Get more rope than you think you'll need - I'd look for a roll that's 50 feet long. You can always trim it shorter, and have some left over to replace the original stuff when she wears it out. Use a staple gun to secure the ends, rub it with catnip, and let them have at it!

Is the scratching post secure? Cats don't like to use a scratching post that they are afraid will fall down on them.

Get some catnip and massage it into the cloth of the scratching post. You may want to do this over the trash, because it will make a mess. It will be worth it though.

We had this problem with our cat, gently take her paws and put them on the post and make a few scratching motions for her so she gets the idea of what it is. It worked for us after a few times.

My cat wouldnt use hers either at first. I knew she loved cheese most dogs and cats go nuts over it. So i put a small peice of it on the top of the scratchie post over and over, so she would have to stretch up with her claws to reach it. Eventually she used it to scratch.

You can buy a special catnip spray that cats love, and spray it on the scratching post. Worked for me.
