It is not necessarily what you say that will make a difference for her - its what you do. Help her with anything she needs done, buy her groceries, make her some meals, help her with cleaning her house - be her friend - those are the important things when someone is grieving.

hmm...
It wasn't cancer, but someone handed me a small card and on the inside was a name and phone number. Under that was:
"Call me if you just want to talk.
I promise just to listen."
About a month later, when everyone else had disappeared back to their own lives, I called...

There really is nothing brilliant to say except 'I am so sorry' and maybe write a sympathy note or card with a happy memory on it, saying that he will always be with her.

tell you her are sorry for her loss and offer your services to help her get by. be a friend, a shoulder to cry on. there isn't much you can say that won't sounding trite or that she won't be sick of hearing. Just let her know you are here when she's ready to talk....and she will need to eventually.

Say your sorry and she will know you care. Call her after time goes by and ask her how she's doing and maybe offer her lunch or something like that.

The common phrase now is "Sorry for your loss" but u could also say "my deepest condolences"
