Believers can escape brain washing lies and deceptions of their religion...( I'm hoping that others will gain from my personal experience)
I was once in a religion that started to act like a cult, before I left. Suddenly everything became a sin, including wearing make up.People were being disfellowshiped for disobeying their new rules, and members became spys and told on other members, if they felt they weren't being obedient. It became untolerable, and the leadership threatened members that if they left, they would lose their Salvation ( which was a big lie! When a person is Baptized into Christ, no one can take that away from you....It's between Christ and you) There were many other signs that the church members were being deceived, so I left.
If believers will study the Bible, without their churches interpretation, they will be better prepared to know when the church is attempting to brain wash them. If they see these non-truths, they should just leave, and not worry about losing their salvation, as there are many other groups that do teach as God instructs. First of all, before even considering joining any particular church, do it slowly, and check out the important doctrines to be sure that they are believable to you. If any church does not like questions, because they may be contrary to what you may have already proven, ...run! Part of the brain washing techniques includes not asking questions, but just blindly following along with everything they tell you. That is a big mistake...as God wants us to prove all things. The longer a person stays in this environment of "checking your brain at the door"...the harder it is to get out. Salvation is supposed to be worked out between Christ and you, with fear and trembling, as the Bible tells us...so taking it slow and cautiously can help to keep you away from religions that try to control you and your mind....
AND....contrary to this comment, "Sorry! But it is the non-believer that needs to escape the brain-washing and deception of this world.
The Word is the truth my friend. Stop fighting it!" IT is not enough to keep a sincere "babe in Christ' from getting hooked by false prophets and the cleverness of the leaderships of these religions. They must protect themselves by being armed with truth and knowledge BEFORE they get trapped into these ungodly organizations. The "Word", being the truth, is wonderful, but God expects us to search the scriptures and to stay away from these "raving wolves" as Christ calls them, as they are wolves in sheeps clothing!

Believers have to do some research and comparison to get the truth. They have to weigh all the evidences and facts to get the real score. If a believer is a Christian, he must rely solely on the Holy Bible. If a believers just accept as gospel truth anything his minister or priest says without any reference to the Holy Scriptures, then he is bound to be fooled.

Read Read Read. For one, actually read the bible with an open mind. If that is not yet possible, then have a quick read of Sam Harris' "Letter To A Christian Nation". If you don't mind a wordy book, then I totally recommend Richard Dawkins' book "The God Delusion". He provides tons of facts and logic in a clear cut scientific way. Eventually you will know you are on the path when you find yourself thinking things like "Wow, why would a deity ever need to kill!!!" or "If god was mad at the egyptians, why then did he not kill them instead of their innocent first born children!"

The best reply here so far is from JoJoCieC...
Think it through. The God of Truth has warned people that there would be deceivers who would lead people astray.
It's all there in the Bible-- the truth, the warnings against deception. Don't be afraid to find out for yourself!

Nothing.
The believers are, by definition, brain-washed.
The brain-washed do not want to escape, and their perceptions of truth are inconsistant and unreliable.
It lies in the hands of the rest of us.... as agents of fortune.... to strike at the inconsistencies in their programming until they split open like gaping wounds and give them the chance to see how they have been manipulated.
.
..
....
........ Then we round them all up and inform them in no uncertain terms that their redemption lies only through David Bowie.

Forget about religion...
Get right with God!
Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life,
and no one can come to God
except only through Him.
