It seems that such an evil character could not really exist and was invented to scare people into church.

Good question, Tish:

As an atheist, I used to believe he was a medieval boogeyman who was fabricated by religions to scare people into compliance. After thoroughly reading the Bible and studying what other religions believe, I have to admit that there is really a cosmic conflict between Good and evil and Satan has effectively prepared earth’s inhabitants to receive him as God.

The prophets tell of the time when Satan himself must come and impersonate God—deceiving almost everyone into accepting him. He certainly exists because of false Messianic doctrines.

There is a publication by a person who tells how he miraculously escaped from a high-level Satan-worship cult. It tells how Lucifer and his fallen angels had councils before the Industrial Revolution to conceal their existence.

Satan’s lying techniques were successful in deceiving the holy angels in heaven. He is more successful with humans who doubt his existence. Everyone should read Roger Morneau’s biography at www.revelado.org/satanism.htm

If you imagine spiders down your back, and you really concentrate at that task, you will actually feel spiders down your back. The mind is a powerful tool. When people around the world gather in places to share an ancient and common beleif system, they will make that BS seem real.

If you get info on ancient texts from aroung 10'000 yrs ago or so, all talk about the 'gods', the Elohim (meaning people who came from the sky). And alot of these gods have have animal or reptilian features (mostly snake). This may be where the Satan myth originated.
The dragon is a common myth throughout the world also. Where does it come from?
Does it have something to do with the dinosaurs? Were they the first creation of an extraterrestrial race?

It seems quite likely. Our knowledge of human history is VERY recent and short. Max 35'000 yrs ago really. Howcome? We have dino fossils, but none that show the evolution between australopithecus, erectus and man? It seems there has been an ice age, or global flood (nukes by aliens?).
God knows what's going on. Looks like evidence of our past has been hidden. Or simply destroyed.

The bible seems to tell the story of our past, but its pretty inconsistent. There are many other texts that tell similar stories (summerian, egyptian, greek etc...), so why should the bible have it all right?
Especially given the advantages Christ "followers" benefit from by "spreading the word". It makes them all-important, its a tool to govern the world, to cash in etc...there is motive .

Do you see the crime clearly?

It gets a bit deeper than that. If you have a dichotomy of good and evil then you need characters to represent them. If you make God responsible for everything like the old testament does in some books then God is both good and evil. As soon as you want an all good god then you need an all evil antigod.
So long as people fear the Devil then they are not following a monotheistic religion. They are practicing polytheism. Adding a son and a holy spirit plus saints and angels soon gives you more Gods than the Hindus have.
Satan is in fact a Christian god

You wouldn't ask if you really doubted.

But there isn't any Satan. No such entity exists.

If the church wanted a REAL threat to scare people into signing up, they'd just need to invoke Chuck Norris.

Which version?

The talking snake in the garden of eden?

Ba'el, the god worshiped by the Canaanites?

Set, the Egyptian mischief god?

Lucifer, the Latin name for the planet Venus?

Mephistopheles, the latin name for Venus in the night sky?

Take your pick.

No, of course he doesn't. He exists on the same level as God, Allah, Zeus, Odin and the Flying Spaghetti Monster. In the minds of believers.
