Not a southwest pilot but the industry is about the same for all pilots, we are away from home about 10-15 nights a month... fly about 90 hrs. a month... make very little early on, southwest does pay very well however... they kind of have to since they don't train you... you need your 737 type rating before you can officially get a job with them... It's a fun industry, lots of honest, hard working professionals, and a few not so professional but you will have that in any profession... I would imagine that southwest employees as a whole have to put up with more angry passengers just because of the way they do seating on a first come, first serve basis and all of that...

Huckelberry must not be a southwest pilot. You will fly 3 to 5 legs per day and then have a layover of 10-15 hours. Your trips will be anywhere from a 1day trip to a 4 day trip. It is not as glamorous as it used to be but it is still a fun job. Southwest does pay pretty good and they have a bunch of great people to work with.

First year as with any airline you are on probation and usually sit reserve the whole time occasionally picking up a few trips here and there. After the first year you can bid on anything from 2-4 day trips, where you fly anywhere to 3-7 trips in one day depending on how long of the trip. Of course everything in the airlines are based on seniority so the newer you are the worst schedule you will have. Don't expect to be home on weekends and holidays untill about your 4th year as an FO and upgrade time is about 6 years right now. Layovers are usually spent in decent hotels. Company is amazing, they are there for their employees and treat them well.

It's easy to get caught up in the glamor and adventure of flying an airliner but like anything I'm sure it would get old. Bad hours, working Sundays, and holidays and hours of boredom sitting in airports that all look alike. I understand the pay is rather good but there are lots of sacrifices.

it's not bad. do a longhaul flight and then get anywhere from 2-4 nights before flying off somewhere else or coming back home. you can be based anywhere and the money is not too bad.
