Thermopylae IS a true story.
There are several other such stories, some ending with victory, others with a glorious defeat. Look up the "thin red line" in Crimea, or the French Foreign Legion at Camerone, or the Napoleonic Guard at Waterloo, or Westerplatte. Women were heroines too- like Catherine "bar the door" Douglas in Scotland.

the movie had a lot of comic tones to it, but there really was a battle where a small group of spartans fought the persian army and in their death, mobilized the rest of greece to come together and fight off the persians

Not up on your history, huh?
After you do your research on the battle, read some Kipling.
