A deciduous forest is a forest where the trees lose their leaves seasonally during the winter. That would be trees like oaks, maples, beeches, birches, ash, walnut, elms, chestnuts, etc. When the first Europeans came to North America nearly all of the territory that is now the eastern USA was covered with a deciduous forest, including the area that is now the state of Maryland. Maryland has many areas that are still covered with deciduous forests, or areas that were forest, became farms, and now are growing back into forests again because the farms are no longer in operation.
