I have an 8 month old cairn terrier pup thats just come into 1st season so I keep on lead. The thing is how long will male dogs be after her and for how long is there a risk of pregnancy. I really didnt want to get her done but we already have a local dog at door and she gets followed.

Hi David,

Dogs have a stage of estrus that lasts 21 days or 3 weeks at a time. This can be shorter or longer of course given the nature of the dog (just like women - some have longer/shorter menstral periods).

This cycle usually re-occurs every 6-7mos.

There is also a cycle of diestrus. This is when the female is going out of heat. During this time she will still be giving off the heat scent and males will still be congregating for her attention.

The diestrus stage will last approximately seven to ten days.

I would suggest buying some 'doggy diapers' at your local pet store in order to prevent any messes.

Make sure that she is kept away from any males (do not leave her alone unattended) during this time. Also consult a veterinarian about having her fixed once she goes out of season.

Hope this helps!

dogs are actually in heat for 3 weeks. They only bleed for one but the best time for pregnancy is the second and third week-when shes bleeding and the week after. She will come in heat about every 5 to 6 months.

Please get her spayed. It's the responsible thing to do, it's healthier for your bit ch and it will give her a better quality of life and will stop her being terrorised by uncut males. It will also prevent more puppies being born where there are literally millions of unwanted dogs already. You might think you can keep her away from males but they are very, very sneaky and determined, and before you know it, she will be pregnant when she is still a puppy herself.

first of all, NEVER take a dog for a walk when they are in season, cos they can actually get aids believe it or not, and a dog will always come up from no where, when her season is over, leave it a week befor you take her out again, and as for the local dog, keep an eye on them and make sure she dont get pregnant, cos trust me.. you dont want that lol
